When keyboard lag causes mouse delays, the underlying issue is often system resource strain or wireless interference, as both peripherals rely on shared system processes and connections.
Here are the primary fixes to resolve the shared lag issue:

Hardware & Connectivity Solutions
  • Check Batteries/Cables: For wireless devices, ensure batteries are fully charged or replaced. For wired, ensure cables are securely connected and not damaged.
  • Resolve Wireless Interference:
    • Move the wireless receiver (dongle) to a different USB port, preferably on the front of a desktop, to ensure a clear line of sight and avoid interference from components at the back of the PC.
    • Use a USB extension cable to position the receiver closer to the mouse/keyboard.
    • Move other wireless devices (like cell phones or external hard drives) away from your PC and peripheral receivers.
  • Test on Another Computer: To determine if the problem is with your peripherals or your computer system, test the mouse and keyboard on a different PC. If the issue persists on another machine, the devices themselves may be faulty.
  • Switch USB Ports: Connect the devices to different USB ports. A faulty or overloaded port can cause input delays.

Software & System Solutions
  • Check System Resources: High CPU or memory usage can cause input delays.
    • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check the “Processes” tab for applications using excessive resources. End tasks for unnecessary background apps.
  • Update Drivers: Outdated drivers are a common cause of lag.
    • Check for Windows Updates in Settings > Windows Update > Check for Updates.
    • Visit your motherboard/laptop manufacturer’s website to manually update BIOS, chipset, and input drivers.
  • Disable Filter Keys (Accessibility Setting): Windows’ “Filter Keys” feature can intentionally slow down repeated keystrokes, which may be perceived as lag.
    • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn off the Filter Keys feature.
  • Perform a Clean Boot: This starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs and can help you identify software conflicts that might be causing the lag. Learn how to perform a clean boot on the Microsoft Support website.
  • Adjust Power Settings: Ensure the “USB Selective Suspend” feature is disabled, as it can cause Windows to turn off power to USB ports to save energy, leading to lag when they are reactivated.
    • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings, and under USB settings, disable USB selective suspend setting.
