Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can help me.

I am a new FM3 owner and I am unable to connect the unit to my windows 11 computer. When I look in device manager it shows “Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)”.

I have downloaded and installed both of the files in the FM3 drivers bundle and I am using a USB-B to USB-A cable. I have tried restarting both units multiple times and I have uninstalled and re-installed the driver bundle multiple times. I have also tried it on my other USB drive and still get the same error. I do not have another computer to try in on. The FM3 is brand new and says that it passed all of the quality assurance inspections. I suspect it’s a problem with the driver, but I’m not a techy guy.

It’s a USB 2.0 A-B cable, 2M in length. No hub, straight into USB port (don’t have one to try either). No, I don’t have a different cable.
Yes, I have tried removing the unknown usb device and reinstalling the drivers and restarting computer. As soon as I plug it back in I get the same error.

Best I can tell all of of chipset drivers are installed and up to date (it says “The best drivers are already installed” when I try to update them).

Yes, I mean I also tried it in my usb-c port (using an adaptor), but have the same error message.

It is a laptop. 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1235U 2.50 GHz running Windows 11 Home.

I haven’t had a problem with any other USB devices previously which leads me to think it’s a problem with drivers (or possibly the unit).

Not sure if this is helpful, but here is some more details from when I go into the events tab for the failed USB.

Device USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\5&2cdbcaf7&0&2 was configured.

The “unknown usb device descriptor request failed” error means there’s a communication problem between your computer and a USB device, often due to power issues, a bad cable, or driver conflictsTo fix it, you can try a simple restart, uninstall the device in Device Manager and re-scan, or check your power settings to disable “USB selective suspend”.

Common solutions
    • Restart your computer:
A simple reboot can resolve temporary glitches in the USB controller drivers.

    • Uninstall and rescan the device:

    • Open Device Manager.

    • Find the “Unknown USB Device” and right-click it.

    • Select Uninstall device.

Go to the Action menu and click Scan for hardware changes. Windows will attempt to re-detect and reinstall the device.

    •
  • Check power settings:

  • Open Control Panel > Power Options.

  • Click Change plan settings for your selected plan, then Change advanced power settings.

  • Expand USB settings and then USB selective suspend setting.

Change the setting to Disabled, click Apply, and then OK.

  • You may also need to uncheck Turn on fast startup in the main Power Options window, save the changes, and restart your computer, as shown in this YouTube video.

  • Update USB drivers:

  • In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

  •

  • Right-click on each device and select Update driver.

  •

  • Choose Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.

  •

  • Install the generic driver and repeat for all USB devices, then restart your computer.

  •
  • Check for a bad cable or port:

  • Try a different USB port on your computer.

  •

  • If you’re using a USB hub or extension cable, try connecting the device directly to the computer to rule out a faulty cable or insufficient power from the hub.

  •
  • Try a different computer:
Plug the USB device into another computer to see if the issue is with the device itself or your computer.
