The first day of the meeting was completed with 16 presentations from 16 countries at different income levels, but all showed that aging population is/will be common demographic trend, and all countries are now seeking solutions to deal with it. In particular with pension systems, countries have had different pathways to change/reform/transform related policies, but a common (again!) trend in developing countries – where aging population is getting faster – is that political will seems to delay reform.
And if this issue will continue, the lessons from ‘inter-generational exploitation’, which was taught and analyzed by my Japanese supervisor in 15 years ago, will be more obvious. Any reform must bear costs, but a long-term appropriate vision will help reduce such costs and reach more adaptive systems!
